Is there some kind of extension that will give me two modem ports instead of one?

I only have one modem port on my desktop computer but I'd like to connect my laptop to it with an ethernet cable. Is there some kind of extension that will give me two modem ports instead of one?

the modem and ethernet ports are of different sizes as well as technology - this will not be possible to do.

however if you refer to the modem port as actually an ethernet port.. i will assume you have your desktop connected to your modem/router, and you want to share the internet among both PCs:

method 1- check your modem/router to see if there is a spare USB or ethernet port. If so, you can connect each device to both of these. If its a single usb and single ethernet port, this may or may not work depending on the modem itself.

method 2 - if you just have a modem (most likely scenario), you will need to buy a router, or a wireless router. I would recommend to get a 2-in-1 router-modem with 4-ports. this will set you back about $100, but you will be able to connect upto 4 devices via ethernet cable. If you have wireless built into the router, you can connect about 10 or 20 wireless computers to it. I would recommend the wireless-modem option.

email me if you need more clarification or if i guessed your scenario incorrectly.

After rereading your question i see the confusion

You have an ethernet port that you use for hooking up a modem to. But you only have 1

Go buy a 4-port hub

plug the desktop and laptop into the hub

plug the modem into UPLINK port

both laptop and PC can use the modem

however most likely

will need to call ISP and add a second IP address
