Is it wrong to put extension cords together to get a longer cord?

I just needed to connect my heater (2400 W) in the other corner of the room and didn't have a long enough cord. So I took three extension cords and kept plugging one into the other until I was able to span the room and connect my heater.

I darkly remember someone saying this to be a bad idea - but is it?

YES YES YES IT IS WRONG %26amp; DANGEROUS!!!!!!

120 volt X 20 amps =2400 watts

This is something that should be on its own circuit.

Try and feel the cords for the wire inside heating up.A # 12 wire is good for 20 amps. You can buy a # 12 25 foot extension cord for around $30.00.However a heater should never be pluged into a cord. The el-cheap-0 cords for lamps or the 100 foot #16 wire will burn your house down.Just call you local fire department to inquire on a major cause of house fires. There should be a law against space heaters..........

It's not wrong, but it is not safe.
I've heard it can be a fire hazard. Don't know how true that is.
Be happy with what you have. Don't try to make it longer. It's dangerous and can only lead to problems down the line.
Its ok .
It is possible to overheat the cords, which does have a very remote chance of starting a fire. You also loose a small amount of power over the distance, but it's usually neglegible, untill you hit about 500ft. It's not exactly safe, but not horribly dangerous either.

P.S. It's also a tripping hazard.
As long as the cords are rated to handle that amount of wattage, you should be fine. Otherwise thay can overheat, possibly melt, and cause a fire.
If the material is good enough, you can extend it without loss of energy and it is definitly not dangerous.
the guage (wiring underneath the plastic) of the extension cord is important, cords are rated.

look at the cord for the rating.

feel the cords if they are hot get a a better one or get a outlet strip with a surge protector.

Sure, it is bad idea.As you increase the extension chords , you are inviting risks of loose connection ,resulting in sparks %26amp; then........ further, as you increase the length of the chord, there is a voltage drop which can cause damage to the equipment.............................ma... be some more reasons but at this moment, please put up an habit of doing things safely.
Hi, read your manual. I am sure you will find in the warning, that your not suppose to do that.

What about changing your room set up around?

Good luck and be safe please.
My omniscient friends say you can do it with no risk of setting something on fire. But they also somehow feel bad about it.

Maybe it's just a new 'extension-cords-put-together-to-get-a-l... complex?
I'd use heavy duty extension cords; 2400 is lots o' watts. Skinny cords might not be able to handle the load for long without burning up!

But why do you need a heater? It's Summer here at the beach! LOL
